Free Run Chicken

To many shoppers, the words ‘natural’,‘free-range’, ‘local’ and ‘organic’ can be confusing terms. Or, perhaps you have ignored the clean-eating trend and are used to buying the old standby “boneless, skinless chicken breasts” from your supermarket. Let us introduce you to a fresher, cleaner, healthier concept:  free-run, air-chilled chicken.

A free-range chicken is a bird that is allowed constant access to the outdoors, with plenty of fresh vegetation, sunshine and room to exercise. Moreover, it has not been given any chemicals (antibiotics, for example) of any kind. So, in other words, the chicken is free to do what chickens naturally do and eat what chickens naturally eat.

Likewise, air chilled meat is much cleaner and healthier.  Unlike traditional cooling methods which involved soaking birds in chlorinated water with thousands of other birds (and their bacteria), air chilled birds hang in sanitary, refrigerated rooms. Why does this matter?

The mass-produced chicken you find in grocery stores is often inhumanely raised in extremely cramped, dirty buildings where the birds can barely move, much less exercise or forage. This creates stress in the chickens that often leads to disease and the need for antibiotics. Stressed growing conditions also results in meat devoid of taste and health value, hence creating the need for chemicals to artificially moisten and flavor the meat.

Free-range chickens, on the other hand, have plenty of room to roam and eat the foods nature intended. Thriving in a stress-free environment, this makes all the difference in the world in terms of their health and taste value to you.
